Survive the Apocalypse Saturday: Can you survive a surgery in the apocalypse?

In our modern world, undergoing surgery is a daunting yet manageable experience, largely due to the availability of clean, sterile hospitals and advanced medical technology. Recently, I had my gallbladder removed, a procedure that, despite its complexity, was made significantly easier by the professional medical environment and access to necessary pain medications like oxycodone and general anesthesia. But what if we found ourselves in a post-apocalyptic world where such resources were no longer available?

The Importance of a Sterile Environment

During my gallbladder surgery, the sterile hospital environment played a crucial role in ensuring a successful operation and recovery. Sterilization prevents infections and complications, which are critical in any surgical procedure. However, in an apocalyptic scenario, maintaining a sterile environment would be one of the biggest challenges. Here are some tips to create and maintain cleanliness in such conditions:

  1. Boiling Water: Use boiled water to sterilize instruments. Boil for at least 20 minutes.
  2. Alcohol: Keep a supply of rubbing alcohol to disinfect tools and wounds.
  3. Clean Cloths and Bandages: Use boiled or alcohol-soaked cloths and bandages to cover wounds and surgical sites.
  4. A Secure Site: Having a room indoors, that is secure, can be cleaned, and is protected from the elements can be critical to this process.

Alternative Pain Management

Post-surgery, I was prescribed oxycodone to manage pain. In an apocalypse, such medications would likely be scarce or non-existent. Alternative pain management strategies include:

  1. Herbal Remedies: Certain plants, such as willow bark (a natural source of aspirin), can help reduce pain. However, knowledge of proper identification and preparation is crucial.
  2. Acupressure and Massage: These techniques can help alleviate pain by stimulating pressure points and improving blood flow.
  3. Meditation and Breathing Techniques: Practices like mindfulness meditation and controlled breathing can help manage pain by reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
  4. Scavenged Supplies: Hospitals, veterinary clinics, doctors offices, grocery stores, and pharmacies may still have medications that could prove useful. In the dire event of a major surgery, these may be worth the search.

Performing Surgery

If surgery is unavoidable in an apocalyptic setting, having some knowledge and preparation is essential. Here are a few critical steps:

  1. Surgical Tools: Keep a basic surgical kit with scalpels, forceps, sutures, and disinfectants.
  2. Medical Knowledge: Study basic surgical procedures and emergency care. Books and online resources can be invaluable.
  3. Assistance: Ensure you have someone to assist. Even basic tasks, like handing tools or holding a light, can be vital during a procedure.
  4. Medical Texts: There are fortunately, in the absence of trained medical professionals, thousands of medical texts, including comprehensive texts like Gray’s Anatomy.

Post-Surgery Care

Recovery from surgery is just as crucial as the procedure itself. Without modern facilities, focus on:

  1. Infection Control: Keep the wound clean and dry. Use sterile bandages and change them regularly.
  2. Rest and Nutrition: Ensure plenty of rest and a diet rich in vitamins and proteins to promote healing.
  3. Hydration: Keep hydrated to help the body recover and fight infections.
  4. Secure Recovery Location: Your recovery location should be secure and allow you the time you need to recuperate, without having to “bug-out” quickly, or to without assistance have to go to far for additional supplies.

Final Thoughts

While we hope never to face a world without modern medical conveniences, being prepared for any situation is a cornerstone of survival. By understanding the basics of surgical care, pain management, and post-operative recovery, we can improve our chances of survival even in the most challenging circumstances. Reflecting on my recent gallbladder surgery, I am reminded of how fortunate we are to have access to advanced medical care and how crucial it is to be prepared for a world where such luxuries may not exist.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and remember that knowledge is your most powerful tool in any survival scenario.
